Horse In Graphite Pencil Pet Portrait

Hello & Welcome To My Blog!

For the last few days I’ve been working on a horse in graphite pencil, on Fabriano paper.

The original photograph follows, and then step by step pictures of my progress.

Enjoy!

After the initial sketch of the outline, I make a start with the eyes.....I always do,  I find that the portrait comes alive instantly this way.
I think the eyes are the key to a good likeness, don’t get me wrong, everything else matters too!,  but with me, the eyes are the most important feature.

I move onto the surrounding area, gradually building up the tone with short strokes.

There’s always a period with at the beginning of a portrait where things look awful, but then suddenly, you work on it a little more, and you see it start to come together with each layer.
Many more layers are added to try to give the hair realism, and more work on the bridle.

Moving onto the mane, and more work on the bridle.

  The portraits complete!

Pet Portrait In Coloured Pencil  From Photograph to Portrait

Here is my latest work in progress, a beautiful Weimeraner cross called Poppy.

I’m drawing the portrait using coloured pencils on Italian Fabriano Paper, and if you check back frequently you will be able to see the portrait take shape.

It’s a slow process of gradually building up the colours by many layers of coloured pencils.
This gives the fur real texture and realism, but takes many hours of patience!

After starting with the eyes, I’m now laying the foundation colours of the face at the moment.
I move from area to area rather than just concentrating on one particular place all the time.

More layers on the face, ear and neck area. Adding more detail to the nose and surrounding area
I'll return to the face to add more brown tones a little later, but for now I am concentrating on the ear and neck.
More updates to follow!

As you can see, I've added many more layers of colour on  the ear and neck area, and started adding the collar.
It's really starting to come together now, but still a long way to go!

Apologies for the long break between posts, I've had a very busy period with other commissions, so I've had to take a short break from this one.....more postings to follow very shortly

Well....it's finally completed,  hope you like it........
